DSG/DCT Transmissions
Direct Shift transmission (DSG) Was developed by VAG and comes in two basic versions.
The 6-speed wet clutch (02E) normally used on 1.9TD/2.0TD and 1.8 petrol engines
The 7-speed dry clutch (0AM/0CW) was developed for the smaller 1.6TD and 1.4 petrol engines
Both units suffer with issues, but the 7-speed is the most troublesome by some margin!!
The 0AM suffer with clutch wear, internal bearing and selector fork failure, the mechatronics isn’t the most reliable of units either and are somewhat expensive.
02E also suffer with clutch wear, internal bearing and synchro issues and once again the even more expensive mechatronics are an issue.
Other manufacturers such as Ford and Volvo have also developed their own version with the help of Getrag. The 6DCT450 (MPS6) being the most troublesome unit by far.
The Gen 1 MPS6 used by Ford until 2015 has terrible issues with the coast clutch collapsing and is the most popular DCT we see in our own works.
The Gen 2 version is a lot more reliable and is based on the 02E DSG designed by VAG
Another troublesome unit is the Audi S-Tronic 0B5 which is a 7-speed wet clutch assembly. These units suffer from clutch temperature issues, mechatronic failure, excessive casing wear as well as internal gear and synchro issues. We are also experienced with the BMW and Mercedes DCT 7 speed wet clutch assemblies
